I have collaborated with PUBLICO (Portugal) to contribute to a live interview and a piece on what to know before applying for a research grant.
"Catarina Liberato's tips will help you find the right research scholarship, prepare the entire application process and stand out among thousands of candidates. But throughout the conversation, the doctoral student at the University of Kent, in the United Kingdom, and coordinator of members and grants of PARSUK shared “more tips that make a difference” and mentioned the mistakes to avoid by those who want to apply for a research scholarship:
Read all documents from the call relating to the application process;
Do not send the same project to different scholarship applications and institutions, but align the project with the objectives of the institution;
Prepare a strategy with time. Do not submit the application on the last day;
Send, before submitting the application, an email to the responsible entity. Ask for information to understand if you fit the profile that the institution is looking for;
Present the proposal based on your research and its importance for society;
Justify the funds allocated by the scholarship;
Articulate the project with the sustainable development goals of the United Nations;
Share your application with peers and senior researchers so that you can receive a first feedback and improve the work plan.
On the internet you can find more tools, namely websites, blogs and other pages on social networks, where these and other advice are shared. The last one mentioned in this conversation - and perhaps the most important thing - is "to have the courage to send the application".
